I lost my job recently, and currently have a lawyer negotiating a severance package for me. My legal fees will be 20% of the increase in the size of the severance package over the company’s initial offer. Are these fees tax deductible dollar for dollar when I report the severance package on my tax return next year, or do I pay income taxes on the entire amount and only get a deduction (rather than a full credit) for the 20% attorneys fees.
